The timestamps alone tell most of the story: The video of the Cybertruck struggling up to the cameraman is 59 seconds long. The video of the RAV4 blowing past the camera and taking on Nm2uTLf. Now in its fifth generation, the Toyota RAV4 is a more complete package than it’s ever been. Cohesive looks, upgraded tech, and an expanded hybrid lineup make this RAV4 a very compelling sell to a large portion of crossover shoppers. To expand the appeal even further, Toyota added an off-road-centric model, with the 2020 RAV4 TRD Off-Road. It’s still every bit a RAV4, just with a more rugged aesthetic and, according to Toyota, some actual off-road chops. But at roughly $10,000 more than the base model, the Off-Road is somewhat less appealing with its $35,180 starting price. For the extra money, you get essentially a fully loaded Limited model, in addition to a TRD-tuned suspension, model-specific 18-inch matte black wheels, a few interior tweaks, and a multi-terrain select system. This package makes the Off-Road ready to tackle exactly what its name suggests. RAVed Up: Our test car wears a price tag of $41,780, which is big money for a RAV4. In fact, it’s too much money. But even with its hefty price, there’s something about the TRD Off-Road that leaves a lasting impression. It has some serious personality, especially with the two-tone paint and matte black accents. And for those needing to do some light off-roading from time to time that don’t require the larger 4Runner, the TRD Off-Road makes sense. Clint Simone; Associate Editor, Video Producer Favorite Thing: It Feels Expensive With Lots of Premium FeaturesLeast Favorite Thing: And That’s Because it is Expensive You’d be surprised by how many people complimented me on ā€œmyā€ car during the review period. With its slick, optional two-tone paint job and the TRD’s subtle-but-cool black accents, this little RAV4 actually has some presence to it, unlike the flavorless models of yesteryear. I don’t know if I’m sold on the rear three-quarter angle or the raked tailgate, but otherwise I think the RAV4 is the best looking car in its class. And within the RAV4 lineup, the TRD Off-Road is the best looking. This goes for the cabin, too. Where cheap plastics and drab seating materials used to fill the interiors of old RAV4s, this car feels like a whole new world. I love the patterned leatherette seats which are very supportive but not too stiff, and the fun red accents on the dash and in the cupholders are a nice added detail. Aside from the interior’s clean design, there are some great features onboard, too, like a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel and dual-zone climate control. Driving the car is a less enlightening experience, however. The steering is pretty lifeless and when passing power is needed, the four-cylinder offers a bit too much noise. Apart from those flaws, I can’t fault the RAV for much else, though. It’s very well-damped and soaks up bumps in the roads nicely. And when I manage to do some light off-roading, the little Toyota handled itself nicely, similar to the Subaru Crosstrek. This is a car you could drive for long stretches of time and not get sick of it. Which is exactly what those who buy it should do. The TRD Off-Road’s $35,180 starting price (not including destination) is roughly $5,300 more than the Jeep Compass Trailhawk, and it's only $1,700 shy of the starting price of a Lexus NX300 (albeit the front-drive model). At this car’s $41,780 price, we’re into luxury crossover territory. And although the RAV4 is preferable to just about everything it competes with, it’s not a luxury crossover and shouldn’t be treated as such. At this car’s $41,780 price, we’re sneaking into luxury crossover territory. This RAV4 packs the following options: the $1,015 weather package with heated/ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, and rain-sensing wipers, the $1,620 JBL audio system with navigation, the $1,950 Technology Package with 360-degree parking camera, front and rear parking assist, and wireless phone charging and the killer $500 two-tone paint. Of that kit, I’d only skip out on the audio system with navigation. The Rav4 comes standard with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, and the factory navigation just isn’t all that great. So I’m still at an MSRP round about $40,000, which is just too steep for a RAV4. Jeff Perez, Senior Editor Favorite Thing: Soft-Road ProwessLeast Favorite Thing: Expensive, Even Before Options A lot of people think they need an off-roader. They don't. What they actually need is a Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road. This rugged-enough crossover can easily tackle dirt paths and pockmarked pavement thanks to its tougher suspension bits, bespoke Falken Wildpeak Trail tires, and grip at all four corners. A good dirt-road flogging proves the TRD's toughness extends to more than just the nameplate; the reworked underpinnings and chunky tires grant the RAV4 better off-road manners than any of its more road-focused trims. Even the RAV4 Adventure model (which I also took off-road in my test) feels like a downgrade comparatively. The RAV4 TRD Off-Road is definitely less likable on-road, though, due to its new rugged personality. Those chunky tires are very loud, limit steering feedback, create a less-refined ride, and increase vibrations all around – even the side mirrors shake like salt shakers. But my biggest issue with this car is the price. There's no way to temper it: the RAV4 TRD Off-Road costs $35,280. And our tester, loaded with options like the $1,015 weather package, the $1,620 JBL audio system, and the $1,950 Technology Package – among a few others – costs $41,780. As Clint mentions, that's nearly luxury car territory (the Lexus NX is just $1,000 more expensive) and represents a huge jump from the base RAV's $25,950 starting price. Even the loaded RAV4 Limited costs $34,480. Competitors Chevrolet Equinox Ford Escape Honda CR-V Jeep Compass Mazda CX-5 Nissan Rogue Subaru Forester | First Test2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road First Test: Temper Those ExpectationsAs if you needed us to tell you this, even this upgraded RAV4 is no rav4 Full OverviewSometimes, combining two good things makes for one super awesome thing. See: chocolate and peanut butter. Sometimes, not so much. See: the 2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD paper, it should work. The RAV4 is a solid compact crossover that's a few minor upgrades away from being fantastic. Toyota Racing Development, better known as TRD, makes awesome off-road stuff and incorporates them on rigs like the Tacoma pickup and 4Runner SUV. Problem is, not all TRDs are made the same. A TRD Pro means the TRD people really went to town on the vehicle. TRD Off-Road means someone threw some off-road-ish parts at it and called it a what we have here, albeit with a weaker starting point for an off-road rig than a Tacoma or 4Runner. There's already an off-road-ish RAV4 trim called the Adventure, but Toyota decided to cash in on the TRD name with the RAV4 TRD Off-Road. the TRD Off-Road gets knobbier tires, retuned shock absorbers, and some skidplates. Along with some dress-up parts, the whole thing cost an extra $3,685 over a RAV4 Means Unpaved RoadDespite having "Off-Road" right in the name, though, the RAV4 TRD Off-Road isn't much more off-road-capable than the Adventure. Ride height stays the same, at inches, as in the Adventure. Approach, breakover, and departure angles don't change meaningfully, either, so this SUV can't tackle any bigger obstacles than the Adventure should've expected that to be the case, especially after Toyota's brand manager told us as much when the vehicle was introduced. To be sure, though, we took the TRD Off-Road to an off-road park and hit the bunny slopes. Sure enough, we were dragging the long nose or the low belly in no time at all. The skidplates, at least, felt like they were worth the Dynamic Torque-Vectoring All-Wheel Drive was even more disappointing. Such a system should be able to detect a spinning wheel and send power to the other side of the vehicle, but the TRD Off-Road didn't really do so. Over offset bumps or in deep ruts, it was easy to get one or more wheels barely in contact with the ground or completely in the air, at which point the all-wheel-drive system half-heartedly tried transferring power before just giving up and letting the loose wheels not all bad news, though. You just have to know the vehicle's limitations are much lower than the TRD Off-Road badges suggest. We also took it through sand and mud and found the beefier tires and all-wheel-drive system handled those situations much better. As long as your definition of off-road is limited to bad weather and unpaved roads, the RAV4 TRD Off-Road will get you there. Just like the RAV4 Adventure, or really, any all-wheel-drive Cost Isn't Just in DollarsIf the TRD Off-Road were simply underwhelming off-road, it would be more forgivable as most owners won't do much, if any, off-roading. Unfortunately, the revalving of the shock absorbers for off-road duty hasn't served anyone well. On-road, the TRD Off-Road rides more stiffly than other RAV4s, which are already firm. This only makes things worse off-road, where you're constantly jostled. Generally, off-road shocks are softer to better absorb rough surfaces, but for some reason Toyota went the other way on this mechanical changes have had almost zero effect on the RAV4 Off-Road's instrumented performance compared to other models, though. Off-road tires tend to produce less cornering and braking grip on pavement than street tires, but the Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail 01As fitted here make no real RAV4 TRD Off-Road stops from 60 mph in 130 feet, on the long side for the segment but otherwise even with other RAV4 models we've tested. Similarly, the average lateral g it pulled on the skidpad and its figure-eight lap at average g are right on top of other the RAV4 TRD Off-Road accelerates to 60 mph in seconds, within tenths of any other non-hybrid sibling. It's an acceptable time for a compact crossover, but we can't help but wish the TRD Off-Road were offered with the RAV4's impressive hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The extra power makes the RAV4 better to drive on the road and would help off-road, as well, all while getting better fuel economy. As is, the TRD Off-Road's transmission seems to be programmed the same as any other non-hybrid's and prioritizes efficiency over Bottom LineYou can get a set of the TRD Off-Road's Falken all-terrain tires for less than $1,000 after tax, so we can't see any good reason to spend nearly $3,700 on the whole package. We recommend you stick with the RAV4 Adventure and buy a new set of off-road tires if you plan to spend a lot of time in mud, sand, and snow. That way, you'll retain the better ride quality and have effectively the same off-road capability. Stay out of situations where you'd need skidplates (which, as established, are hard to get into with a RAV4 anyway), and you're good to good! The entry-level model is affordable but very basic, but mid-range trims offer plenty of features that buyers in this segment will appreciate. A four-cylinder is standard as is an eight-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available, but you won’t see even the most rugged model in the RAV4 lineup sidling up to a 4Runner or a Tacoma at the trailhead. Toyota bundles a host of standard driver-assistance features into the RAV4, including adaptive cruise control. Upscale trims come with luxury features such as faux-leather upholstery, heated seats, and a JBL stereo system. Those who want even more efficiency can go with a RAV4 Hybrid, which we review separately. Where This Vehicle RanksWhat's New for 2022?The RAV4 receives the most minor of updates for 2022: More aggressively-styled headlamps are now offered on all but the base LE model, Cavalry Blue is a new available color, and LED fog lamps are now standard on XLE Premium, Limited, Adventure, and TRD Off-Road and Which One to Buy It's hard for us to resist the cool new TRD Off-Road, but we'd practice restraint and choose the mid-range XLE Premium. It provides plenty of standard equipment that the LE and XLE don't offer, such as 19-inch wheels, a power liftgate, dual-zone automatic climate control, faux-leather upholstery, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Toyota makes its suite of driver-assistance features standard across the lineup, so there's not much reason to go with a pricier trimĆ¢ā‚¬ā€unless, of course, you really want ventilated Transmission, and PerformanceThe 2022 RAV4 uses a 203-hp four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive remains standard, but Toyota now offers a choice of all-wheel-drive systems, dependent on trim. The Adventure model we drove was equipped with an all-wheel-drive system that can disconnect the rear axle when needed to improve fuel economy. At our test track, the RAV4 proved to be quicker than its predecessor: We recorded a 60-mph time of seconds with the 2019 model and seconds with the 2018. The dutiful four-cylinder can be noisy, especially during highway-passing attempts, and the transmission on our test vehicle seemed to stumble when called upon for a downshift. The RAV4 HybridĆ¢ā‚¬ā€reviewed separatelyĆ¢ā‚¬ā€snapped off an even quicker 60-mph time in our hands. The RAV4 feels solid and stable when cruising the interstate and holds its own when pitched into a twisty section of road, but it doesn't inspire the same confidence as our segment favorite, the Mazda Economy and Real-World MPGThe RAV4 earned class-competitive fuel-economy estimates from the EPA. Front-wheel-drive RAV4s can manage up to an estimated 35 mpg on the highway. The all-wheel-drive Adventure delivered 32 mpg for us on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy route, 1 mpg shy of the EPA's estimated rating for that trim. That puts it neck and neck with the Honda CR-V and represents a huge improvement over the 2018 Adventure model (which managed only 25 mpg), but it is outdone by the Volkswagen Tiguan, which delivered 33 mpg. For more information about the RAV4's fuel economy, visit the EPA's Comfort, and CargoInside, the RAV4 prioritizes ergonomics and cubby storage. A useful shelf spans the dash and complements the large center console. The version we tested featured a mix of soft-touch surfaces and nice plastics. The base trim, called LE, is quite spartan and comes with cloth seats, a plasticky steering wheel, and single-zone manual climate control. On the next-step-up XLE, Toyota throws in a few perks, but there's much more to like on the XLE Premium, including faux-leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a stitched and padded dashboard and center-console armrest. The RAV4's rear seats are easy to stow, and they fold to a nearly flat position, opening up the cabin for cargo. We fit 10 of our carry-on suitcases behind the rear seat and 22 with it folded. The Nissan Rogue matched the RAV4 here, but the Subaru Forester beat it by one in each and ConnectivityLower trims come with a touchscreen, but an can be had starting at the XLE level.
